In Pennsylvania, More Latinos Join Elective Office
CASA in Action Primary Candidates Win Big; Lancaster City is Heading to Be Majority Latino this November
York, PA - With the results of the 2019 primary municipal elections, Latinos are poised to be the majority in Lancaster City Council and also having representation in the York City Council, affirming the growing number and influence of this constituency in these areas. Election results in Lancaster City Council will bring a total of four Latinos, including a Latina, to elective office. While in York City Council there is now a Latino nominee headed to the General Election. These new candidates joined two additional progressive women in changing the political landscape of key South Central PA cities. With these primary victories, both City Councils take a strong step towards becoming truly representative of the city demographics with majorities of people of color.
According to the U.S. Census, Latinos represent over 30 percent of the population in York City and nearly 40 percent in Lancaster City.
“The municipal primary election winners tonight demonstrated that change starts now and it starts right here in South Central PA,” expressed Elizabeth Alex, Pennsylvania Director for CASA in Action, the region’s largest immigrant rights electoral organization. “We urged voters to elect leaders who would fight for welcoming communities, advocate for living wages, and join the Puerto Rican diaspora to find solutions for climate change. We are thrilled that all our candidates won: Jaime Arroyo, Amanda Bakay, Xavier Garcia-Molina,Lou Rivera, and Edquina Washington will be representing our communities on the Lancaster and York City Councils.”
