CASA in Action Releases Key NOVA Criminal Justice Endorsements
Falls Church, VA - For the first time since its launch in 2010, CASA in Action is taking a stand to make sure that its members are served by prosecutors and sheriffs that are embracing the very best policy responses to the racist excesses of the criminal justice system. CASA in Action endorses the following 5 individuals who will ensure people receive equal treatment while keeping our communities safe.
Endorsements for Key Public Safety Positions:
Arlington & Falls Church Commonwealth’s Attorney: Parisa Dehghani-Tafti
Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney: Steve Descano
Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney: Buta Biberaj
Prince William County Sheriff: Josh King
Prince William County & City of Manassas Commonwealth’s Attorney: Amy Ashworth
“CASA in Action believes these individuals reflect our core values of equality, fairness, and accountability,” stated Gustavo Torres, President of CASA in Action, the largest electoral organization fighting for immigrant rights in the Mid-Atlantic region. “Tafti, Descano, Biberaj, King, and Ashworth understand that our justice system must be aligned with our community values.”
From traffic stops to street searches, drug arrests to over-prosecution; black and brown residents of Northern Virginia are communities beset by the excesses of a criminal (in)justice system. Today’s courts and prisons cost Virginia taxpayers tens of millions, treat addiction as a crime rather than an illness, and waste countless lives. For immigrants ensnared in its grasp, even petty criminal charges construct a passageway to permanent banishment from family and community.
The best policy solutions emerging from around the country – Marilyn Mosby’s implementation of a discretion policy with immigrant defendants and refusal to prosecute marijuana possession; Kim Ogg supporting the elimination of cash bail; Eric Gonzalez’s jail as a last resort policies; and more – belong in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William County. And for the first time in a long time, change makers are running in these counties that understand that the criminal justice system is the most exciting forum to implement a progressive vision. CASA in Action is in these races because our members live these crises.
Primary election will take place on June 11, 2019.
